Graydon, you old codger! Thank you for your excellent review of my involvement in the evening. I really did have a blast, and you actually kept it light for me throughout the show, which was refreshing. Always have a great time playing with you. Also, I enjoy performing music with you! ;)

it makes sense, especially when the venue needs the band to bring people, to determine what time would maximize the crowd for that band. if i could bring out 100 people for the after-work hour, why not play then and have a completely different show later on with a band that likes to bring out a crowd at, say, 9:30 or 10pm? that messes with the notion of having "a night of music" with three bands playing from 9:30pm to 12:30am (or later) but that model seems decidedly monolithic. it works for large venues, but less and less for smaller ones.

let's open a bar, dave. we'll have board game tournaments in the afternoons and sell mini-pizzas. we can call the place "hellsmashers anonymous".

I totally agree with some of your musings on how things could be improved at bar that have live music. The old model doesn't always hold up well. Two points:

1) I would happily get drunk earlier rather than later

2) venues that rely on bands to supply the clientele should be more flexible about how these shows are set up, rather than steadfastly clinging to the status quo. I understand that in a perfect world, the demand would exceed the supply, and shows would have built in hype and anticipation. But the truth is that there are hundreds of shows happening on any given night. Bars and bands would both profit a little more if there wasn't this unwritten rule about things not starting until after 10. Maybe more people would come out if they knew it was going to be more comparable to a movie in terms of time commitment and getting up for work the next day.

Graydon, you played like a zillionaire! A zillionaire that owns a small 40-something-key Yamaha keyboard from the 1980s... fun show, and the booker seemed to enjoy it too. And well he should have. Because there was a zillionaire in the house!

No hidden meaning on not getting a mic. We'll find a way to fit another mic stand up there.... you do sing loud enough for the front room though... I've never noticed, 'cause I can hear you loud 'n clear...

Sounds like the Borough show went really well but I want to know all about the release party. I'm upset I wasn't able to make it, but working at 7am the next day means no party time for Doug.
I hope things went well and we'll see you soon when your niece/nephew is born. You're going to be an uncle, how messed up is that?

it may have been more the power of love, as given to us by huey lewis & the news, more even than the power of music or social networking. speaking of social networking, i didn't get in touch with robin or charlie, but that's only because i did get your message after we had already played. i blame the linearity of time...what a jerk time is!

Well let's all thank the power of social networking and it's ability to introduce total strangers to one another. Or maybe it's the power of music. Sounds like you folks are having a rockin' good time even with the lack of sleep and the lack of Myke (who I guess is easy to lose?). Have a great show in the 'wa and you should try and get ahold of Robin and Charlie while you're there (hopefully you see this message with enough warning) to invite them out to the show. I'm sure they would come and if you don't have their number you can always call the homestead and get it.
